What's all this about?
It might seem a little early in the almost-brand-new fourth-generation car's life cycle, but Mazda has already begun with the MX-5 special editions.
Crikey, really?! It has form on this score, doesn't it?
Yes, there have been umpteen mildly styled variations on all previous generations of MX-5 that have been touted as limited production models.
So what's this one?
A mildly styled variation on the current generation car. It's called the Sport Recaro and it basically offers an aero body kit plus lots of Alcantara inside. Based, as it is, on the top-of-the-line 160hp 2.0 Sport Nav, it therefore becomes the new MX-5 range-topper at a considerable £24,295. Just 600 will be available to order.
Can you expand on the exact updates?
You get a Brilliant Black Sports Aero Kit that consists of a very discreet front splitter, set of side skirts, rear bumper trim and a tiny boot spoiler - it will contrast brilliantly with one of the two free-of-charge, standard paint colours (Ceramic Metallic, seen in the pics) and not quite so clearly on Mazda's current signature hue, Soul Red Metallic. Further black detailing is brought to bear on the door mirrors, while the 17-inch wheels are diamond-cut items with an engraved MX-5 logo on them.
How about the cabin? Recaro seats?
Well, yes, naturally. All that's happened elsewhere is an explosion of Alcantara - it clothes the Recaros and the dashboard panel. Red seat piping goes with red stitching on the dash, handbrake and gear lever, there are some alloy pedals in the driver's footwell and unique floor mats for all occupants to rest their feet on.
What's the standard equipment count like?
Generous, as on all Sport Navs - LED automatic headlights, leather steering wheel, climate control, DAB, Bluetooth, satnav with three years of free European map updates, rain-sensing wipers, keyless entry and go, a full-on Bose sound system, MZD Connect with a seven-inch touchscreen and cruise control. That's a lot of stuff to pack into a two-seat roadster.
And when can I order it?
Right now, if you so wish.
