What's this all about?
It's Mazda's new MX-5, the fourth generation of the two-seat, rear-wheel drive sports car. We attended a media event in Barcelona (one of three simultaneous taking place around the world) and stayed up until 3am to witness the covers being taken off. Here are the official shots.
So what's new?
Not a whole lot, fans of the MX-5 formula will be glad to know. It still has two seats, drive goes to the rear wheels as ever and, for now at least, it's a roadster. Mazda has made improvements where they matter though, including a more tactile interior.
But you can tell us about the engines, right?
Actually, no. Somewhat surprisingly, Mazda chose to tell us very little indeed about the MX-5's mechanicals. We know that it's 100kg lighter than the outgoing car, which puts it at just over 1,000kg, plus it'll be powered by Mazda's SkyActiv-G petrol engines. Options therefore could be the 1.5- or 2.0-litre units and we don't expect turbocharging to feature.
Surely there's more to say?
Not really, sorry. No mention was made of the tie-up with Alfa Romeo, though it looks unlikely that Mazda will utilise Fiat's engines for the MX-5. We may have to wait a while to get more information too, as the new MX-5 doesn't go on sale until summer 2015. It might not even be at next month's Paris Motor Show as the Japanese company focuses its efforts on launched the Mazda2 supermini in Europe.
