With the W213 E-Class already confirmed for its facelift by Mercedes-Benz, Affalterbach-based meisters of pace Mercedes-AMG were not to be outdone. So here's the new Mercedes-AMG E 53 4Matic+. This EQ Boost hybridised performance E-Class replaces the old E 43 and basically uses the same drivetrain as the CLS 53. That means 435hp and 520Nm flowing to all four wheels (hence the '4Matic+' bit of the E 53's name) through a nine-speed AMG Speedshift TCT 'box. Performance is sprightly: 0-62mph takes 4.5 seconds for the E 53 and 4.6 seconds for the slightly-more-gorgeous E 53 Estate, while both are limited to 155mph or, if you tick an option box, 168mph. All of the visual updates enacted on the regular E-Class range are in force here, while you'll spot the E 53 twins' Panamericana grille, their big A-wing front bumper arrangement, a set of 19-inch (standard) or optional 20-inch alloy wheels, round quad exhaust pipes, and new rear diffusers. There are three new body colours, too, which are Graphite Grey metallic, Mojave Silver metallic or High-Tech Silver metallic, and inside it benefits from the new six-spoke (of sorts) steering wheel and additional displays in its MBUX-controlled Widescreen Display dashboard. Tobias Moers, chairman of Mercedes-AMG, said: "Our revised E 53 4Matic+ is extensively enhanced, both as a saloon and an estate. The visual update offers our customers real added value, which is impressively underscored by our hallmark AMG grille. With the electrified 3.0-litre engine, we have retained the proven drivetrain. The extensively revised suspension now offers even more of a range between long-distance comfort and precise dynamism."
