What's all this about?

Mercedes-AMG has updated the GLA 45 S 4Matic+ with a few minor tweaks to keep the compact performance SUV feeling fresh. Styling tweaks make the headlines, but the tech team has been busy too, giving the most powerful version of Mercedes’ smallest SUV some added appeal.

Erm, it doesn't look that different...

Ah, we never said the changes weren’t subtle… Look more closely and you’ll spot body-coloured wheel arch extensions and a slightly different front apron, as well as the AMG logo on the bonnet. There are new lights, too, with LEDs all around and a new light signature as a result. But the basic design is much the same, with 21-inch alloy wheels, round twin tailpipe trims and a lip spoiler on the roof, as well as the same squat stance and aggressive grille.

Is that all?

Not at all. Mercedes-AMG has also tweaked the MBUX infotainment system with some bespoke AMG displays and “an extended range of functions”, making the system even more powerful. There’s a new and more powerful USB charging system, too, complete with an extra USB-C port for added phone connectivity. Last but by no means least, Mercedes has also fitted the AMG Performance steering wheel as standard, giving the GLA a little extra motorsport-inspired drama.

Anything else?

Not much. The basic stats are still the same, with the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing a meaty 421hp, then sending that to the road via an eight-speed, twin-clutch automatic gearbox. That, combined with Mercedes-AMG’s clever 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, allows the car to get from 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds before racing on to a top speed of 168mph.

So when can I have one?

An excellent question. Mercedes-AMG hasn’t really said, but the less potent GLA 35 4Matic is already on sale with prices starting at £53,120, so expect the 45 version to land soon, with prices stretching towards the £60,000 mark.
