This is our first look at the latest BMW 2 Series, which - lest you forget - is based on the front-wheel-drive 1 Series platform, and the first model up the ramp will be the first-ever 2 Series Gran Coupe. A four-door 'coupe', the 2 GC measures 4,526mm long (wheelbase 2,670mm), 1,800mm wide and 1,420mm tall, and it has frameless glass in each of its doors. The styling is... distinctive, we'll give it that much, and inside is the latest BMW Operating System 7.0 plus plenty of high-end technology. Confirmed engines (all turbocharged) for the UK range are the 140hp 218i, the 190hp 220d and the 306hp M235i, this last one using the hardware out of the X2 M35i to be the performance champ of the range (although there are no confirmed figures as yet). All models get a fancy 'ARB' wheel-slip limitation device and yaw-moment distribution through BMW Performance Control to help their front-driven nature, while the M235i also benefits from xDrive AWD and a Torsen mechanical limited-slip diff. BMW UK has announced the three trim grades here will be Sport, M Sport and M Performance (that's the M235i, by the way), and prices start at £25,815 for the 218i, £31,355 for the 220d and £37,255 for the M235i xDrive. The 2 Series Gran Coupe completes BMW's even-numbered four-door canon, as well, which already contains the 4 Series GC, the now-defunct 6 Series GC and the latest addition to the fold in the form of the 8 Series GC.
