What's all this about?
The Cheltenham Festival (March 13-16 this year) is a grand old event for the 'sport of kings', horse racing. So it's something that high-end, luxury marques might like to be associated with. Such as Bentley, for instance, and its bespoke Mulliner division. Which has already done a few special versions of the Bentayga SUV, so here's another one.
Ah, what's it called?
A one-off commission to celebrate Bentley's ongoing partnership with The Jockey Club, its rather clunky and somewhat long name is the Bentayga by Mulliner, Inspired by The Festival. Rather unsurprisingly, Bentley will display this unique SUV at this year's Cheltenham jamboree.
So what's different about it?
Outside, the Bentley BbM, IbTF (nope, that doesn't work, either...) is finished in Spruce, a modern take on British Racing Green. This is teamed to Blackline Specification and a set of colossal 21-inch, diamond-turned, black-painted wheels .The colour scheme is said to allow the Bentayga Mulliner Festival (better...) to appear 'equally at home in town or country'. Moving inside, we've got tweed - ever the fabric of the super-posh - to counter Cumbrian Green and Saddle two-tone leather.
Nice. Any more interior features that are specific to the Festival edition which we can talk about?
Light blue contrast stitching permeates the tweed on the door cards and also forms the seat quilting, while a Burr Walnut veneer sports a straight-grained 'picture frame' cross-banding technique. If you're wondering why on Earth that might be, it's because it's supposed to make you think of some of the antique furniture you'd find in The Jockey Club's private rooms. Which rather assumes you're in the rarefied and privileged position to have been inside the private rooms of The Jockey Club in the first place, but we digress...
Stop waffling and tell me more about the cabin.
There's not much more to add. The passenger-side veneer wears a little gold horse graphic, while each seat in the cabin has an embroidered horse and jockey emblem, created from a Saddle and Cognac thread. Classy.
Anything else?
Uday Senapati, Mulliner's head of technical operations, said: "The Cheltenham Festival is widely recognised as one of the finest horse-racing events in the world, and the festival's unique sense of occasion is a perfect showcase for the world's most exclusive SUV, the Bentayga. The Mulliner team has been deeply inspired by the equestrian lifestyle, and this has encouraged us to use new materials and techniques for the first time on a Bentley in developing this one-off commission."
