What's all this about?
Here's a car that offers three ways of saving the planet - it's the new Hyundai Ioniq.
What do you mean, 'three ways of saving the planet'?
Unlike other manufacturers, who perhaps offer just one drivetrain option for their eco-cars, Hyundai will offer the Ioniq in three distinct 'green' formats: there's one without any sort of dirty fossil fuel on board at all, which is the full electric (EV) model; then there's a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which mates a petrol engine to a meaty electric motor; and finally, there's a milder petrol-electric hybrid, which does away with the charging port of the PHEV, the electrification only providing minimal assistance to the petrol unit.
Wow, when is it due out?
As you can see, we're at 'teaser' stage at the moment so details are thin on the ground. Following a proper unveil in Korea in January, the Ioniq will take its global bows at the Geneva and New York motor shows held in March 2016. There, we'll find out more about the car, although for now we can tell you that the Hyundai Ioniq has a bespoke platform designed specifically for the varying levels of electrification. Oh, and Hyundai writes the model as 'IONIQ', if that helps in any way.
