What's all this about?
Jaguar is helping to promote road safety with the Jaguar First driving experience, where 11-17 year olds can practice driving under realistic conditions away from the public highway. The courses use the new Jaguar XE 2.0-litre diesel and take place at six venues across the country.
How does it work?
The cars are equipped with dual controls and lessons will be delivered by government approved driving instructors. Each venue is equipped with a realistic road layout to allow young drivers to practice basic driving. Training will emphasise the skills and attitude necessary to become a responsible driver. Courses will include the opportunity to practice steering, driving in two-way traffic and parking. Some sites will have space to experience the XE at speeds up to 40mph.
Currently, some 400 people each year are killed in accidents in the UK involving young drivers, and one in five young drivers crash their car within six months of passing their test. It is hoped that extending the learning period and introducing driving safety at an earlier age will dramatically reduce those numbers.
Where are the courses?
At the moment Jaguar First is available at the following venues: Allianz Park, London; Bath and West Showground, Bath; Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham; EventCity, Manchester; Lingfield Park Racecourse, Surrey; and Ricoh Arena, Coventry. There are 30-, 60- and 90-minute experiences available with prices starting at £45. It is promised that the time booked equals the time spent driving the car.
