What's the news?
Vauxhall has announced that an all-new turbocharged 1.6-litre SIDI petrol engine will make its world debut in a Cascada at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The new unit will give the Cascada 200hp, 300Nm of torque and a top speed of 146mph.
Mechanicals
Although Vauxhall already makes a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine, a new engine block has been developed. The new block can withstand a higher maximum combustion pressure, is fitted with updated pistons, and has a compression ratio that has been reduced from 10.5:1 to 9.5:1. To make this newfound performance sound good to the ears, Vauxhall has tweaked the car's induction and exhaust tones.
Whilst power figures have been announced, the all-important fuel economy figures are likely to remain under wraps until the engine's debut in Germany.
Anything else?
For now the new unit sits at the top of the Cascada range next to the 195hp 2.0-litre BiTurbo CDTi engine. The 200hp Cascada comes to market with a six-speed manual gearbox in October; with first deliveries expected by early 2014.
