What's the news?
Volkswagen is soon to launch all-wheel drive 4MOTION versions of its Mk 7 Golf model, continuing a tradition that was first started in 1986. Featuring three trim levels and two engine specs, the latest Golf 4MOTION is said to better than its predecessor by some margin.
Exterior
Visually, apart from the badging, there is nothing to distinguish the 4MOTION Golf from a standard front-wheel drive version. Three trim levels are available from launch: Trendline, Comfortline and Highline; and Volkswagen states that even the entry-level Trendline model will come with features such as daytime running lights as standard.
Interior
As with the outside, the interior mimics that of the front-drive variant. Basic equipment includes an on-board computer, air conditioning, front and rear electric windows and a TFT-touchscreen control panel.
Mechanicals
Powering the Golf 4MOTION is a choice of two diesel engines. Output is either 105- or 150hp, with fuel economy figures of more than 50mpg for both engines. The new system weighs 1.4kg less than the old one and features a fifth-generation Haldex coupling - resulting in a lightweight unit that's supposedly quick to react. Other fuel-saving measures include brake regeneration and a stop-start system as standard.
Safety features fitted to every model include seven airbags, an electronic stability programme, EDS (electronic differential lock system) and an Automatic Post-Collision Braking System.
Anything else?
While UK pricing has yet to be announced, we do know that the premium over the front-wheel drive Golf is €1,800 in Germany, which is just over £1,500. A date for the UK's release is still to be confirmed.
