Not long after Subaru announced that the Prodrive Performance Pack (PPP) would be free for the summer on the Impreza WRX and WRX STi, a limited edition model is launched - the Impreza WRX 300.
Don't get too excited though; the 300 relates to the number of examples the run is limited to, not the power output. The WRX 300 is based on the regular WRX, with the PPP boosting power to 261bhp and peak torque to 257lb.ft. Sure, these figures are more modest than the PPP-equipped
STi Type-UK, but this practical and spacious four-door saloon still hits 60mph from rest in only 4.8 seconds and will go onto 145mph.
You'd be foolish to buy the WRX 300 right now if it only featured the PPP. After all, it costs £21,495 on-the-road against the standard WRX's £20,300, and the regular WRX gets the PPP for free until July. The 300 has a few unique features though, with all examples finished in 'WR Blue' with gold 17-inch alloys riding on 215/45 tyres. Other changes include an aluminium gear knob, WRX-branded carpet mats and a "Subaru World Rally Team" logo on the front seats and front lamp covers.
We suspect most buyers of the WRX 300 will be rally fans, though Subaru are also fitting an RAC 'Trackstar' anti-theft and recovery device (with a year's free membership) as standard, ensuring that the 300 is actually good value for money.
