Buoyed on my the sales success of the
2-litre diesel version of the X-type, Jaguar has nicked Ford's 2.2-litre version of the same engine and plonked it under the bonnet to create a true performance diesel saloon.
As fitted to Ford's Mondeo, the 2.2-litre engine features a variable geometry turbine turbocharger, allowing quick spooling up at low engine (gas flow) speeds, and high boost when required. The actuation is electronic and is therefore mapped in the engine's control computer. The claimed output figures are impressive: peak power is 153bhp and a torque figure of 266lb.ft is available at only 1800rpm. The engine also features an overboost facility; when the driver opens the throttle fully the engine releases up to 295lb.ft for a short period of time, allowing safe overtaking for instance.
One of our few criticisms of the manual 2.0D X-type we reviewed was the notchy action of the gearchange. It turns out that the five-speed manual cannot handle the torque of the 2.2-litre so Jaguar has fitted a new six-speed item, along with beefier driveshafts. Sadly, there doesn't appear to be any plans for a four-wheel drive option.
Prices have not yet been announced, but expect to pay similar prices to the 2.5-litre V6 version, starting at about £22,000 when the 2.2D hits the showrooms in September. The engine will be available in either the saloon or estate. We hope to drive the 2.2 X-type before the end of the year, so keep an eye on the main
Road Tests page for the review.
