To coincide with the 25th birthday of its groundbreaking Quattro system Audi's TT has been given a boost late in its life with the launch of a Sport version. Based on the already rapid 225bhp TT Coupe Quattro, the Sport features an uprated 1.8-litre turbo unit now boasting 237bhp, which is almost as much as the current 3.2 V6 range topper. The turbo ensures that there is a good spread of torque as well with 236lb.ft available from 2300rpm to 5000rpm.
This translates to searing performance with a 0-60mph time of 5.9 seconds (half a second faster than the V6) and a 155mph maximum. Key in these figures is weight reduction, intended to and make the TT a more driver-focused car. All in all 49kg has been shed to give the Sport a kerb weight of 1416kg, thanks mainly to the removal of the rear seats and the replacement of the spare wheel with a can of puncture repair foam. Where the seats and parcel shelf once sat is a structural brace to improve rigidity and the handling of the TT.
Further enhancing cornering ability are the unique 15-spoke alloys with the rear wheel up half an inch in width to add to the grip available. The improved performance is kept in check by the bigger brake set-up from the TT V6. Also carried over from the V6 are the more aggressive body addenda including the bigger front and rear spoilers. The unique two-tone paintwork sets off these looks, available in a special range of colours specific to the Sport - a black roof combined with a range of bright metallics.
The interior has been breathed on too, with new sports seats trimmed in Alcantara. The wheel, gear knob and hand brake grip are also re-trimmed highlighting the Sport's intent as a driving machine. The car is available to order now, having made its debut at the
2005 Geneva Show, with deliveries beginning in May.
