Mitsubishi has launched what is (again!) promised to be the final incarnation of the current generation
Lancer Evolution series: the Evo IX. The big change from the Evo VIII is the addition of Mitsubishi's variable valve timing system, MIVEC, allowing yet more power to be extracted from the hallowed in line four-cylinder two-litre unit. Now boasting 286bhp at 6500rpm and 289lb.ft of torque at 3500rpm, the MIVEC should endow the Evo IX with more flexibility, offering even more of that legendary performance through a broader rev range.
The active centre differential driveline set-up remains unchanged, and the car will be none the worse for it. Some interior trim tweaks here and there and some aerodynamic detail changes are the extent of the rest of the changes in a fairly minor late life facelift.
