Audi will stun show goers
in Geneva with the brutal new RS4. This is set to be the first of the next generation super saloons and sees Audi landing the first punch in the heavyweight fight with
the M3, not due for replacement for some time yet. With 414bhp, from a 4.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 featuring race proven direct-injection technology, the RS4 promises to at least match the M3's projected 400bhp, putting the RS4 ahead in the power race for the first time. More remarkable than the high revving power (the engine is red-lined at 8250rpm) is its flexibility, with 90% of the 317lb.ft peak torque available anywhere from 2250 to 7600rpm.
The headline performance figures are impressive: 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds and standstill to 124mph in only 16.6 seconds. The car is, of course, limited to a 155mph maximum but will apparently run on to around 180mph if let off the leash. In-gear performance is set to be just as crushing thanks to the flat torque curve. Putting this power down is the latest generation of the legendary Quattro drive train featuring a rear wheel drive biased set up utilising the Dynamic Ride Control first seen on the RS6. The stability control driver aids intervene later letting the driver exploit the car's dynamic excellence more completely. The RS4 also features an M-car like Sport button on the steering wheel to improve the throttle response.
The looks are equally aggressive with a deep front air dam, honeycomb front grilles, 19-inch alloys and lowered suspension. Interior tweaks include lightweight RS seats with inflatable side bolsters surrounded by sumptuous leather and carbon fibre detailing. What this all adds up to is a new RS aimed at driver appeal and satisfaction, designed to take the fight to BMW. This may well be the first car to dethrone the M3.
The car will be available to order in the spring with deliveries in the autumn. Hopefully we'll get our hands on one early next year, so keep an eye on the main
Road Tests page for the review.
