Smart has released details of its latest design study, a compact pick-up called the for-us. It is powered by an electric motor and will make its debut in January.

Measuring just over 3.5 metres long, the for-us is slightly larger than a fortwo. Inside there are two seats and the load platform is designed to carry two Smart e-bikes. Docking stations ensure the bikes are always charged up.

Power comes from a 74bhp electric motor, shared with the Smart fortwo electric drive (due to launch in spring 2012). Thanks to 96lb.ft of torque lively acceleration is promised along with a claimed top speed of 74mph. Lithium ion batteries are used with a capacity of 17.6kwh, although no estimated range has been given.

Smart's designers have incorporated traditional pick-up cues into the design. There are large wheels and minimal overhangs while the front end features a protection guard. The body panels are described as being convex and 'sensuously shaped'.

The interior features contrasting mother-of-pearl and brushed aluminium elements. Instead of a rear-view mirror the for-us is fitted with a smartphone in a holder on the dashboard, connected to an on-board video camera. The seats are of an open shell design with the yellow fabric designed to work like a hammock.

The Smart for-us will be exhibited at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit from 14-22 January.
