The VW Passat BlueMotion has taken the Guinness World Record for most miles travelled on a single tank of fuel by a standard production car. It achieved an amazing 1,526.63 miles.
Driven by Gavin Conway of The Sunday Times, and followed by a few Guinness officials, the car averaged 89.82mpg over the distance. Its official combined economy rating is 64.2mpg.
Travelling mostly on French motorways and through a few towns, its average speed was a little over 45mph.
After first draining the tank, Conway filled the car up with 77.25 litres of forecourt diesel, which at the current UK average of 118p per litre would have cost just over £91. That means the per-mile fuel cost was around 6p.
Volkswagen unveiled a
new Passat at the
Paris Motor Show, and it is due to hit UK showrooms in January 2011.
