2009-04-06: Ssangyong C200 concept bows in

Ssangyong will show two new models at the Seoul Motor Show, an almost production ready C200 crossover and a hybrid version of the Kyron.

The C200 show car is described as 'closely resembling' the production version, which will be launched later this year. Unlike larger models in the range the C200 does not have a separate chassis; giving it a more car-like feel. The platform is suitable for both front- and four-wheel drive and may well be used for other models in the future.

Under the bonnet is a new 2.0-litre turbodiesel with 173bhp. The engine meets Euro V exhaust regulations and is claimed to have low CO2 emissions. The show car features a six-speed automatic transmission and the production model should be offered with both manual and automatic gearboxes.

To enhance the car-like feel the Italdesign-styled C200 has been designed with a low centre of gravity. Lightweight suspension components reduce overall weight as well as promising decent ride and handling.

Also on display will be a Kyron featuring Ssangyong's diesel hybrid technology - first seen at last year's Geneva Motor Show. The system combines a diesel engine with an electric motor and high-voltage battery. Ssangyong has developed a Torque Split Device (TSD) that manages the power delivery of the electric motor. No fuel consumption figures have been released but it is claimed that the diesel hybrid technology will allow up to a 30% improvement in fuel economy and 50% reduction in exhaust emissions. No word on production dates as yet.

The Seoul Motor Show opens on 2nd April while the C200 is tipped to go into production later this year. Prices and performance figures for the C200 will be released closer to the launch date.
