SEAT has unveiled a prototype hybrid version of the Leon, called the Twin Drive Ecomotive. The concept is designed to run on electricity in urban areas with an internal combustion engine to extend the range.
The Twin Drive Ecomotive Leon uses lithium-ion batteries to store electricity. Extensive changes have been made to the transmission, brakes and the heating and cooling systems. Working on the prototype will allow SEAT's engineers to refine control systems, battery charging and vehicle range. If the development goes to plan then the first hybrid SEAT models could be ready for sale by 2014.
The unveiling took place at SEAT's Technical Centre in Martorell, near Barcelona. SEAT's Managing Director announced the company's plans to increase its range of Ecomotive models. The current range includes diesel-powered Ecomotive versions of the Ibiza, Leon and Alhambra.
