| All-new model | 2008 Paris Motor Show | 2009 Ferrari California |
The teasing is over. Today, Ferrari released these first photographs of its new GT model, to be badged the California, along with preliminary technical details.
Although the name has been resurrected from the new car's illustrious predecessors, it features several firsts for the brand, including the mounting of its V8 engine in the so-called mid-front position, well back behind the front axle for improved weight distribution. The engine itself is a 4.3-litre V8 and it features direct injection for the first time in a Ferrari. Though Ferrari points out that the California emits 'just' 310g/km of carbon dioxide, this engine still produces 454bhp at 7,500rpm, enabling the new convertible to sprint to 62mph from a standstill in less than four seconds.
Assisting both the acceleration and economy is the fitment of a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, which should be better suited to the (relatively) more relaxed demeanour of the California than Ferrari's F1-Superfast transmission, though it is is thought that the new twin-clutch gearbox may replace the single-clutch 'box in time.
Though the California is unashamedly designed to be a high-speed cruiser, keen drivers shouldn't turn their noses up at its specification. The F1-Trac traction control system is standard, as are Brembo brakes with carbon ceramic discs. Ferrari has not yet disclosed a figure for the California's weight, though extensive use of aluminium for the bodywork and chassis should keep it to an acceptable figure, despite the solid folding roof. No interior shots are available as yet, but we believe that the rear seats are usable, albeit occasionally.
More details will be divulged between now and the California's first public appearance at the
Paris Motor Show in October. We'll be there.
