There's a new entry-level point to Porsche Taycan ownership and you're looking right at it. Called the 4S, it's the first model to join the Stuttgart concern's EV family after the Turbo and Turbo S derivatives already announced, and it'll cost from £83,367 excluding any qualifying Government grants - that makes it a good chunk cheaper than the 625-/687hp Turbo (£115,858) or the 625-/761hp Turbo S (£138,826). But that's because it's a good chunk less powerful, too. Like the more potent Taycans, the 4S comes in two guises, which are the regular car (up to 530hp, or 390kW, on overboost) with a 79.2kWh lithium-ion battery, or the optional 4S Performance Battery Plus (PBP, up to 571hp, or 420kW, on overboost) which has the largest battery (by a very small margin) yet fitted to any Taycan at 93.4kWh. This PBP gives you more range than a regular 4S (287 plays 252 miles) and access to 270kW rapid charging (the non-PBP 4S is capped at 225kW), but it doesn't alter the performance, as either Taycan 4S will run 0-62mph in four seconds precisely before topping out at a restricted 155mph. Much of the impressive tech and design of the Taycan Turbos is preserved here, so the 4S has two electric motors, all-wheel drive, a two-speed transmission at the rear, an aerodynamic figure of 0.22Cd, Porsche 4D Chassis Control (which is to say, three-chamber adaptive air suspension and PASM electronic damper control), six-piston front and four-piston rear brake callipers gripping 360- and 358mm discs respectively, and that same smashing interior from the Taycan. Standard equipment will include Comfort front seats with eight-way electrical adjustment and partial-leather hide, and LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus) up front. In case the owner has taken off the Taycan 4S badge at the rear, which is the clearest indicator that the purchaser didn't go for a Turbo or Turbo S, then look for 19-inch aero-optimised Taycan S Aero alloys, red brake callipers and all of the front apron, side sills and rear diffuser being finished in black. Order books are open at Porsche Centres across the UK right now and first deliveries will begin in January 2020, with 4S customers gaining three years' access to Ionity and Porsche Charging Service as part of the purchase price, as well as the opportunity to go to the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone to sample what their car is truly capable of.
