What's all this about?

SEAT is hoping to tempt compact SUV buyers with the prices of its new Ateca, which start at £17,990. The order book opens on 3rd May with cars arriving in showrooms this September. Four trim levels will be available at launch including a limited-run 'First Edition'.

What do you get for the money?

The range starts with the 'S' model, which comes with air conditioning, five-inch touch screen and a leather steering wheel. On the outside there are 16-inch alloy wheels and LED daytime running lights.

SEAT expects the SE (starting at £19,590) to be the biggest seller in the UK. This can be identified by its 17-inch alloys, LED tail lights and black roof rails. Equipment upgrades include dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors and power folding, heated door mirrors.

Details of the First Edition will be revealed in May; for now the flagship trim is 'XCELLENCE', which starts at £23,905. Wheel size is up to 18 inches while the roof rails and window surrounds are finished in chrome. The interior features a number of premium touches including lights in the door mirrors that project the model name on the ground, colour LED interior ambient lighting and a wireless phone charger that also boosts the in-car phone signal.

What's under the bonnet?

Two petrol and three diesel motors are available in the Ateca; S and SE-level cars get the three-cylinder, 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine with 115hp and CO2 emissions of 123g/km. The S is also available with a 1.6-litre TDI with 115hp that returns 65.7mpg and 112g/km. Customers looking for more power can pick either a petrol or diesel unit with 150hp; the petrol is a 1.4-litre 'EcoTSI' with active cylinder shut down; the diesel is a 2.0-litre that is also available with 190hp in the range-topping XCELLENCE.
