What's this then?
It's called the Niro and it is the latest SUV from Kia, only this time it is a hybrid only. Currently making its public debut at the Chicago Auto Show, it should make its way to Europe by the summer.
Hybrid you say?
Yes, though, unlike some of the larger electrically enhanced SUVs on the market, the Niro isn't a plug-in hybrid, instead working in the more traditional hybrid sense. Performance won't be stellar; Kia quotes a total system output of 146hp. This comprises of a 1.6-litre four-cylinder GDI petrol engine that produces 103hp and a tractive motor - or transmission-mounted electric device (TMED) as Kia calls it, which produces 43hp and works in tandem with the petrol engine.
What's the end result?
According to Kia the Niro emits just 89g/km of CO2 so it should be friendly to the environment, but friendlier to fleets and company car users from a taxation perspective. There is also a host of driver aids aimed at extending the car's range as much as possible. These include a new Eco-DAS (Driver Assistance System) along with a Coasting Guide and Predictive Energy Control. This works by monitoring the topography of the route ahead and decides when to utilise the stored energy in the hybrid system for inclines to minimise excess fuel consumption.
Is it nice inside?
It certainly seems to be. Kia has stretched out the wheelbase as much as it could in the Niro so interior space should be good and the relatively high roofline will make it feel airy inside too. There's also a new instrument layout that looks more advanced than we're used to seeing from Kia.
