Their posters are in every young boy's room and every grown man's garage. They run at lightning speed, come with the latest racing technology and are extremely rare - not the typical car you'll see parked at your local tyre shop. They're what every car enthusiast lusts after: supercars.
TyreCompare brings you some of the greatest supercars ever made that have pushed on the game a little bit more.
1. McLaren F1
Probably the best supercar ever built in the 1990s, the McLaren F1 sprints from 0-60mph in less than four seconds. It features a 6,064cc 60-degree BMW V12 engine, which allows the car to propel to a top speed of 240mph - making it one of the fastest production cars ever made. The concept was conceived by Gordon Murray.
2. Bugatti Veyron
No 'greatest supercars list' would be complete without the Bugatti Veyron. First produced in 2005, the Veyron features a quad-turbocharged, 8.0-litre, W16 cylinder engine. That original version had a top speed of 253mph, beating the record of the McLaren F1, and was named Car of the Decade by the BBC program Top Gear. The Supersport variant, meanwhile, has a top speed of 267.7mph, recognised as the fastest street-legal production car by the Guinness World Records.
3. Jaguar XJ220
A two-seat supercar produced by British luxury automaker Jaguar, the XJ220 was first met with disappointment during its debut due to the replacement of its concept's V12 engine with a turbocharged V6 unit. However, all doubts about performance were instantly crushed when ex-Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson took the supercar out for a test drive. The XJ220 was named the fastest production car throughout 1992 with its top speed of 213mph before the McLaren F1 claimed the record in 1993.
4. Ferrari LaFerrari
The LaFerrari is the Italian sports car maker's answer to the hybrid supercars of Porsche and McLaren - but featuring a V12 engine. Unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, the LaFerrari is astonishingly quick, capable of reaching 62mph in less than three seconds. Only 499 units were produced, and if you want to drive one, well, all you need is over one million US dollars.
5. Nissan GT-R
The Nissan GT-R is a two-door sports coupé powered by a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6, mated to a six-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission. The successor of the Nissan Skyline GT-R, this supercar has a top speed of 193mph. It earned a host of awards and recognitions, including Top Gear's Sports Car of the Year in 2007, Autocar's Driver's Car of the Year in 2008, and Automobile Magazine's Automobile of the Year in 2009.
6. Lamborghini Aventador
A sports car featuring a 6.5-litre 60-degree V12 engine, top speed of 217mph, single-clutch seven-speed semi-automatic transmission and signature scissor doors - what more could you ask from the Aventador? Various automotive magazines such as Car and Driver and Motor Trend hailed the Aventador as the best Lambo ever, and it won Top Gear's 2011 Supercar of the Year.
