What's all this about?
Mary Barra, GM's CEO and one of the most powerful women in the automotive world, has confirmed a new SUV flagship will be built by Vauxhall before the end of the decade.
Do we know anything more about the car?
Not as such, as Barra simply said it would be a 'second flagship, alongside the Insignia' for Opel, which in turn means Vauxhall too. So perhaps we'll get a large Vauxhall SUV based on the Insignia platform.
Where will the new SUV be built?
Barra gave workers at Opel's European HQ in Rüsselsheim the good news, as the model will be built there - securing €245 million (around £194m) of investment for the brand. She added that the investment was a 'clear sign of GM's commitment to Opel, to Germany and to Europe'.
Will there be any more cash coming our way?
Yes, a further €500m (about £396m) has been slated for engine and transmission plants at Rüsselsheim, Kaiserslautern and also the Polish site at Tychy. And Barra also 'expressed her delight' at the popularity of the new, fifth-gen Corsa, which had 45,000 orders confirmed prior to the car's market launch. So it looks like good times for the European arm of GM right now, which should equate to a more secure future for UK employees of Vauxhall.
