What's the news?
Peugeot took a 308 hatchback fitted with its new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol PureTech engine to the Almeria circuit in Spain, where the Golf rival managed to travel 1,125 miles on a tankful of petrol. The car was driven for over 32 hours non-stop until the 51.4 litres of fuel from its tank were utilised.
The 130hp PureTech eTHP 130 engine, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, returned 99.1mpg, setting a new record, which was further verified by UTAC (Union Technique de l'Automobile, Motocycle et Cycle). Turbocharging on the three-cylinder engine, a manual gearbox and the lightweight structure of the 308 are claimed to be responsible for the good fuel economy.
Anything else?
Peugeot now offers the new engine on the 308 hatchback. It joins the existing engine line-up of three petrol and four diesel units.
