What's the news?

Not that other carmakers' Geneva efforts will be slim picking in comparison, but Nissan's stand is worth a gander in Switzerland. It's packed with lots of new, nearly new and soon-to-be-new machines, with a range of refreshed crossovers - including the debut of 'another next-generation model', possibly the Juke - joined by the avant-garde BladeGlider concept and the storming GT-R Nismo.

So, crossovers first. Following hot on the heels of the revamped Qashqai, the new X-Trail will be shown at Geneva. It has the same sort of front-end treatment as the Qashqai and features bi-LED headlamps, the Nissan Safety Shield suite of driver assist systems and a third-generation NissanConnect navigation/infotainment system. It also promises seven-seat capacity.

Nissan's hint at 'the arrival of another next-generation crossover model' can surely only mean the Juke is going to have the corporate face stitched onto its rather distinctive looks - we'll have to wait and see if our suspicions are confirmed as correct.

Those of you who couldn't give two hoots about crossovers might want to check out the European debut of the GT-R Nismo. Its 3.8-litre V6 makes a mammoth 600hp, while a revised aero package adds 100kg of downforce to the proceedings. Nissan also says the bespoke suspension set-up of the Nismo was fine-tuned here in Europe. This harder, faster GT-R means the 'standard' car is developing a slightly (and we stress slightly) more comfort-oriented personality, and we'll be trying that version of the R35 very soon.

Finally, there are debuts for two more machines - one a concept, the other a production reality. The first is the BladeGlider and if you're thinking it looks familiar, you'll be aware of the ZEOD RC electric racer. The BladeGlider is kind of a road-going interpretation of the narrow-front-track design, and is powered by lithium ion batteries and a couple of motors; electric, of course. As is the e-NV200 - this is a zero-emissions commercial vehicle based on the drivetrain of the Leaf hatchback. The e-NV200 will be available from May, in either full commercial vehicle guise or as a five-seat people carrier.

Anything else?

Nissan's growing range of products - from EVs right through to monsters like the Nismo - means that in 2014, the company will build more cars, crossovers and light commercial vehicles than ever before at its European plants. The facility in Sunderland will be ramping up as part of this growth, as last year 80 per cent of all Nissans sold in Europe were built here too.
