What's the news?

Volkswagen has declared its intention to become a global market leader in electric mobility by 2018. In a briefing given by CEO Professor Dr Martin Winterkorn at the Frankfurt Motor Show the company's strategy for electric and hybrid vehicles was revealed. Stating that environmental factors are beginning to dominate purchasing decision he observed: "The electric car cannot be a compromise on wheels, it must convince customers in every respect."

Commenting on the group's current line-up Winterkorn said: "We have the most comprehensive approach to tomorrow's mobility. From highly-efficient, eco-friendly diesel, gasoline and natural gas-fuelled engines to classical hybrids, purely battery-driven vehicles and plug-in hybrids - no other automaker can match the broad range we have to offer."

The company plans to win customers with 'technically mature', practical, safe and affordable electric vehicles. Currently there are fourteen models from the various group brands, from the Volkswagen e-up! to the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid, with electric or hybrid drive. If there is sufficient demand the number could be increased to 40 models thanks to a system of modular components for alternative powertrains. Each year Volkswagen invests over €7 billion (about £5.88 billion) in research and development with electric mobility representing a large proportion of that spend.

Winterkorn added that anyone who is serious about ecological responsibility has to go one step further: "We must have a holistic mindset and a comprehensive approach to mobility - from generating energy through development, production, retail and vehicle operation right down to recycling. Our clear goal, therefore, is to lead with holistic, modern mobility concepts."
