What's the news?

Production of the Volkswagen Kombi in Brazil is to draw to a close this year, and as such Volkswagen has designed a special Last Edition version that will be limited to just 600 examples worldwide. Since its launch in 1957, the Kombi has barely changed; and currently sits as the world's longest produced vehicle in automotive history.

Exterior

Well, it's a Kombi. The classic, simple styling has remained for the last version; and is offered in an exclusive two-tone white and blue paint finish. Nostalgic whitewall tyres, white centre caps and tinted rear windows all come as standard; as do '56 Anos Kombi Last Edition' decals to mark the final model. Unlike original models, the chrome surrounds around the headlights have been replaced with body-coloured ones; and the indicators feature clear lenses as opposed to orange versions.

Interior

The nine-seater model features a two-tone interior to match the exterior colour scheme. The blue and white seats are finished in vinyl. More Atlanta Blue can be found on the door and boot panels, as well as the standard issue carpets. The Last Edition also features blue fabric curtains with embossed curtain fasteners - reminiscent of top-spec versions from the '60s and '70s.

Up front the traditional dials sit alongside a contrastingly modern stereo that has both USB and auxiliary connectivity options. A commemorative numbered identification plaque can also be found on the dashboard of each model to signify the special edition.

Mechanicals

In-keeping with tradition, the Volkswagen Kombi has a rear-mounted 78hp 1.4-litre petrol engine; with power sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox.

Anything else?

Every buyer of a Kombi Last Edition will also be given a certificate of authenticity, which will be sure to keep residual values high in years to come. Volkswagen has yet to reveal a price for UK editions; assuming of course that the final version reaches our shores at all.
