What's the news?

This week, Mazda has released the first images and information on its new 3 hatchback. An all-new design inside and out has been created, while power comes from range of 'Skyactiv' powertrains.

Exterior

The all-new Mazda3 now features Mazda's 'Kodo - Soul of Motion' design language. The lower, wider model has shorter front and rear overhangs to improve both weight distribution and cabin space. The front-end houses Mazda's new signature grille and headlamp combination, while the rear has more of a coupé-like profile than the outgoing generation.

Interior

The interior for the Mazda3 has been re-engineered for both driver and passenger. A lower steering wheel, head-up display and improved adjustability will benefit the driver; while extra space and the car's infotainment system should keep passengers happy. Upgraded seats come in a variety of two-tone colour options and the boot is larger, too.

In terms of infotainment, the centrally mounted screen features smartphone compatibility as well as access to over 40,000 stations, Facebook and Twitter. This is then connected to a high quality Bose sound system and can be controlled by either voice-activation or a new rotary dial. Whether all this is standard remains to be seen.

Mechanicals

Skyactiv power units feature exclusively in the new Mazda3. The three Skyactiv-G petrol engines all meet Euro 5 emissions standards and the Euro-6 compliant 2.2-litre Skyactiv-D diesel unit comes with twin variable geometry turbochargers. All engines can be had with either a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox, both of which have been made more efficient and with quicker gear changes than before.

The Mazda3 also comes with a barrage of safety features. A Front Obstruction Warning and Smart Brake System work together to prevent causing a rear-end impact by detecting any imminent collision and braking autonomously. A Rear Vehicle Monitoring system is also fitted to detect vehicles approaching from the rear.

Anything else?

The latest generation Mazda3 is expected to reach the UK by January 2014. Prices and specification details are to be announced in the coming months.
