Audi has released details of the latest cars to benefit from the Cylinder-on-Demand (CoD) technology first seen on its S and RS models. The A1 and A3 will get a new version of the 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine with 140hp, featuring the CoD system, to supplement the 122hp unit already available.
Offered in both three-door hatchback and five-door Sportback body styles the A1 comes initially with a seven-speed S-tronic twin-clutch gearbox, while the A3 gets a six-speed manual gearbox. Later this year both transmissions will become available for both models. Fuel economy for the A1, A1 Sportback and A3 is 60.1mpg with CO2 emissions of 109g/km. The A3 Sportback manages 58.9mpg and 112g/km while the five-door A1 achieves 57.6mpg and 113g/km of CO2.
The 140hp power output is backed up with maximum torque of 250Nm produced between 1,500- and 3,500rpm. Official performance figures include 0-62mph in 7.9- and 8.0 seconds for the A1 and A1 Sportback with the A3 and A3 Sportback managing 8.3- and 8.4 seconds respectively. Audi quotes the same 132mph top speed for all cars.
Prices start at £16,740 for the A1 and £20,055 for the A3 with the order book opening this week.
