What's the news?

As promised, Renault has released details of the new Captur SUV, the French firm's first foray into the world of urban crossovers. Described as '...a compact, unaggressive crossover which is particularly user-friendly' the Captur will be officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Exterior

Captur in name and Captur in nature. The new crossover not only takes its name from the Captur concept that was originally shown at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, but also the looks, which were first seen in production format on the 2013 Renault Clio. The link to the Clio is understandable as the new Nissan Juke rival is based on the best-selling supermini, giving it the dimensions required to scoot in and out of city traffic.

In addition to a raised ride height the Captur also sports wide wheels and sill guards giving the crossover the rugged look required of the sector. Renault will also introduce a level of customisation to the sector with a two-tone colour scheme being one of the standout options.

Interior

The customisation options spread to the interior with a range of colours and motifs available for buyers to choose from. The cabin itself is said to feature the appointments and comfort refinements of an MPV, such as a high-up driving position, large boot, modular interior and innovative stowage solutions, in a compact body of just over four metres in length.

Standard specification looks to be impressive with hands-free entry, hill start assist and rear parking sensors included, while Bluetooth connectivity, an in-dash Renault R-Link touchscreen multimedia tablet plus the Arkamys six-speaker system are available from the options list.

Mechanicals

While not explicitly stated the Captur will (as expected) utilise the engine line-up from the Clio supermini, which forms the Captur's base. Described as 'the very latest Renault technologies with best-in-class fuel consumption and CO2 emissions' the line-up is likely to include a 75hp 1.2-litre petrol unit, turbocharged three-cylinder TCe petrol prodcugin 120hp and a 90hp 1.5-litre dCi diesel.

Anything else?

The Captur's unveil in Geneva will be an interactive one with internet users able to take a closer look at the car on their computer, tablet or smartphone and take part in a competition entitled 'Captur the Day' once the car is shown to the world on March 5.
