MG has launched the diesel-powered MG6 with demonstrators in showrooms now. The 1.9-litre DTi-TECH engine gets stop-start and 'Smart Charging' and has a combined cycle fuel economy of 53.5mpg, while CO2 emissions are 139g/km. Lower emissions means the cost of the first year's VED drops from £275 to £120 - compared to the petrol model.
The new motor develops 150hp and 350Nm of torque at 1,800rpm, delivered through a six-speed manual gearbox. Official performance figures are 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds and a top speed of 120mph. Diesel models also get E-HPAS power steering, designed to reduce assistance as speed increases. The suspension has also been tuned to suit the new engine and MG claims the oil burner retains sporty dynamics.
Standard equipment levels match the petrol-powered 6, including air conditioning, MP3-compatible in-car entertainment and fog lamps even on the base 'S' model. Prices for the diesel version start at £16,995.
