What's the news?
A new model in the Caterham range, 'big brother' to the Supersport, has arrived, called the Supersport R. It comes with a 2.0-litre engine and five-speed gearbox. Prices start at £27,995 fully built and the R offers 25% more power than the standard Supersport.
Exterior
To the casual observer one Caterham looks much like the next; and the Supersport R is about what is under the aluminium and fibreglass rather than cosmetic additions. Aeroscreens are fitted instead of a full windscreen (a proper screen is an option) and Supersport models get bespoke half-doors, tunnel top and boot cover.
Interior
Supersport models also get a bespoke steering wheel, while the instrument display includes a change-up light. Seats are composite race items and four-point harnesses hold driver and passenger in place.
Mechanicals
Power comes from Ford's Duratec 2.0-litre motor. This develops 183hp, which goes through a five-speed transmission to a limited-slip differential. Quoted performance figures are 0-60mph in 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 130mph. Suspension is designed to work on both road and track with race springs and Supersport dampers.
Anything else?
The Supersport R is also available in ready to assemble form for £24,995.
