The 2013 Chevrolet Corvette will be the first car to use the company's 'Generation 5 Small Block V8' - codenamed LT1. Featuring direct injection, Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) and variable valve timing it is described as one of the most advanced V8 engines in the world.
As with most Corvette engines since 1955 it is an overhead valve V8 - a layout that is claimed to be lighter and more compact than rival, twin overhead cam units. Displacement is 6.2 litres with an initial power output of 450hp - and maximum torque of 610Nm. As installed in the Corvette it is claimed to give 0-60mph in less than four seconds along with an estimated 26mpg on the American EPA drive cycle.
The aluminium block and heads are new, though the architecture is based on the Generation 4 V8. Within the heads are combustion chambers designed to give an 11.5:1 compression ratio.
Final details of the Corvette LT1 V8 will be released next year, while the car itself gets its world debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January.
