BMW has announced additions to the engine range for the 1 and 3 Series, which will be available from November. There is a new 114d, a petrol 3 Series EfficientDynamics saloon and extra petrol and diesel versions of the 3 Series Touring. A new navigation system is also available in the 3 Series saloon.
Providing a new entry point to the 1 Series range is the 114d. This comes with a 95hp, 1.6-litre turbodiesel unit. BMW claims 0-62mph in 12.2 seconds and a top speed of 115mph. With EfficientDynamics measures including Brake Energy Regeneration, stop-start and Active Aerodynamics 65.7mpg fuel economy and 112g/km CO2 emissions are quoted. Orders are being taken now although pricing for both three- and five-door versions will be announced later.
The 3 Series saloon gets a new, economy-focused petrol engine in the 320i EfficientDynamics. This is a 1.6-litre, twin-turbo, four-cylinder motor with 170hp and 250Nm. The official performance, economy and emissions figures are: 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds, 53.3mpg and 124g/km. Another version of the twin-turbo 1.6-litre powerplant is fitted to the new, entry-level 316i. In this guise it develops 136hp and 220Nm, enough for 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds with CO2 emissions of 134g/km and 47.9mpg economy. The 316i starts at £22,850 and the 320i EfficientDynamics saloon is an extra £2,880.
BMW has also added three new engine options for the 3 Series Touring. The 320i uses a 2.0-litre, twin-turbo motor with 184hp and 270Nm. A 2.0-litre turbodiesel in different states of tune is used in both the 316d and 318d. The 316d has 116hp, the 318d 27hp more; with 0-62mph times of 11.2 and 9.2 seconds respectively. Both diesel models have official CO2 emissions of 123g/km and fuel economy of 60.1mpg.
The 3 Series saloon will receive the BMW Professional Navigation system, already available in the Touring, from November. The new system comes with an improved processor and 3D rendered display.
