Alfa Romeo is testing a 4x4 and the Italian car manufacturer will introduce it in 2004. This car is based on the stunning Alfa Kamal concept car (
click here for pictures of that car), which was shown at this year's
Geneva Motor Show.
Sources say that Alfa will launch its production 4x4 at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show with sales starting soon after that. It is not sure yet what the name of the production model will be or if Alfa will stick with the "Kamal" name.
The entry-level production model will feature a 2.2-litre JTS engine and the range topper will get a 3.2-litre V6 unit as recently tested by us in the 147 GTA and last year in the
156 GTA.
The Kamal concept car was also fitted with this V6 engine, which develops over 250 bhp with peak torque of 300 Nm.
The Alfa Kamal concept car was well received and its design is striking. It is expected that Alfa will keep most of its striking design genes on the production model.
On the spy photo of the Alfa Romeo 4x4 being tested it appears that the car is a 156 Sportwagon. However, it has a raised body, indicating that the Italian car manufacturer is therefore testing the chassis of its future SUV.
The 2004 Alfa 4x4 will share its underpinnings with the new-look156.
The Car Enthusiast will be driving the new 156 Sportwagon in September. Keep an eye on the main
Road Tests page for the review.
