Just unveiled is the latest model to join the Tesla portfolio - the seven-seat Model X is fully electric and is said to combine the best bits of an SUV and people-carrier with zero tailpipe emissions.
Available with either rear- or four-wheel drive (the latter also with a performance pack for more power), the Model X should benefit from great handling thanks to its low centre of gravity. The four-wheel drive model has 50 per cent more torque than the rear-wheel drive example, and can sprint from 0-62mph in less than five seconds says Tesla.
But the biggest news is what Tesla is calling its Falcon Wings -which to you and I are cleverly hinged gullwing doors. Folding up and out of the way in one movement, they not only make tight car park spaces usable, but also allow un-restricted access to the second and third row of seats.
As you'd expect from Tesla, there's plenty of hi-tech kit inside, including a large touchscreen centre console giving access to information and entertainment on the move. The Model X is due to enter production late in 2013 with customer deliveries scheduled soon after - though like other models in the range expect it to come with a hefty price tag.
