Audi has released images of what is set to be the second generation Audi A2 ahead of its debut at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show. Powered by an electric-only powertrain that promises strong performance and long range the new A2 is set to take the fight to BMW's recently announced i3 hatchback.
Dubbed a 'design study', the A2 concept is the clearest indication yet that Audi is set to revive the name of one of the most innovative cars in recent years. The original Audi A2 made extensive use of aluminium and small efficient engines to return great fuel economy and low CO
2 figures; however it was launched at a time when such concerns were not top of car buyers' priorities. The new car looks set to take up the mantle and borrows the upright stance and sloping roofline of the car of old.
At 3.80 metres long, 1.69 metres wide and 1.49 metres tall the Audi A2 concept seems ideally suited to urban driving where space is at a premium, but thanks to a long wheelbase with the wheels pushed out to the extremities, plenty of interior space is provided. The concept shows a four-seat layout with space between the rear seats for a bicycle, though expect to see a conventional five-seat cabin when the car makes it to the showroom. New materials feature extensively in the car's interior with surfaces made of polyurethane with a neoprene feel and a ribbed material made from recycled polyester covering the flat central floor area.
No further details of the powertrain are provided other than it is set to be a powerful electric drive system, but with the VW Group parts bin full off efficient petrol and diesel engines expect to see more conventional offerings alongside the full electric model by the time the Audi A2 hits showrooms.
