MINI will show a new design study at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) on January 10. The Paceman Concept is described as a 'Sports Activity Coupé for the premium small segment'. Think of it as a three-door Countryman.

The styling retains the familiar MINI cues including the floating 'helmet' roof, wrap around glass, chrome-rimmed headlamps and the radiator grille. Compared to the Countryman there are new air intakes in the front bumper. Black wheelarch extensions accommodate new 19-inch alloy wheels and blend into matching side skirts. At the back, the number plate recess echoes the shape of the radiator grille.

Inside there is light leather and four individual seats, separated by MINI's U-profile rail system, which runs the length of the interior. Familiar themes such as the central speedometer and elliptical side trims are used. The speedo features a contrasting rim that is also used on the central air vents and gear lever surrounds. The door trims incorporate storage bins, shaped armrests and speakers for the sound system.

Power for the MINI Paceman comes from a 1.6-litre, twin-scroll turbocharged engine from the MINI John Cooper Works. With 208bhp and 192lb.ft (and up to 207lb.ft available on overboost), power is directed through the company's ALL4 permanent all-wheel drive system. The rest of the chassis is familiar MINI territory with MacPherson struts at the front and multi-link suspension at the rear.

Although not confirmed for production, it's highly likely that the MINI Paceman could form the basis for a new model range. It would be targeted at the three-door Range Rover Evoque.
