Chevrolet launches the production-ready Camaro Convertible at the LA Auto Show this week. First seen as a concept back in 2007, buyers will have a choice of V6 or 6.2-litre, 420bhp V8 power when it comes to Europe later next year.
An open version was always planned, so the Camaro's coupé body apparently needs very little reinforcement to compensate for the missing roof. Torsional stiffness is said to be superior to the BMW 3 Series Convertible's. As a result Chevrolet has retained the hard-top's suspension settings and promises the drop-top model will be as good to drive as the coupé.
The fabric roof has been designed to give a smooth, taut appearance that echoes the lines of the fixed-head model. The hood is power operated and features a single, central handle to latch to the windscreen header. It also features a heated glass rear window and acoustic headliner to keep noise levels down.
The Camaro Convertible will go into production in January. Prices will be announced nearer the on-sale date.
