When you're celebrating a 200th anniversary it calls for something special to mark the occasion. In Peugeot's case that means a high-performance electric roadster, the EX1, which has already set acceleration records.
If the outline of the EX1 appears familiar it is because it draws upon the architecture of two previous Peugeot concept cars, the 20Cup and Asphalte. The proportions combine a broad front track with narrowly spaced rear wheels. It also incorporates some of the company's latest design cues, including the 'floating' radiator grille.
Drive comes from a pair of electric motors, one for the front wheels and one at the rear. Combined they provide 340bhp and 177lb.ft as well as contributing towards 'optimal' weight distribution.
To prove that the EX1 is not just for show Peugeot has used it to set six acceleration records; some of which have stood for 39 years. The FIA-approved runs included a quarter mile time of 14.40 seconds with a terminal speed of 62.4mph (beating the previous record set in an Opel GT Electric in 1971 by 6.7mph). Before the end of the year Peugeot will take the EX1 to China aiming to set more world records.
The designers have also created a 'garage' for the EX1. It incorporates solar panels, a storage battery and a charger designed to use 'a range of renewable energy sources'.
The EX1 is apparently a one-off and not scheduled for production. The car will be exhibited in Paris but not, as you might expect, at the
forthcoming motor show. Instead it will be on display at Peugeot Avenue, 136 Avenue des Champs-Elysees, Paris from 22 September to 14 November.
