Audi announced the arrival of the A8 L at
Auto China 2010 with a 130mm longer wheelbase for increased rear-seat space. The range also gets a new 6.3-litre W12 FSI engine for the top model.
Three of the four power units offered are also available in the standard wheelbase A8; 3.0- and 4.2-litre turbodiesels plus a 4.2-litre petrol V8 - though the W12 is exclusive to the extended model. The 6.3-litre motor develops 493bhp and 461lb.ft, which is claimed to give 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155mph. Perhaps more astonishingly (in a good way), the official combined cycle fuel consumption is 23.5mpg and the official CO
2 figure is 278g/km.
Other facilities that come with the flagship engine include powered closure of the rear doors, individual rear seats with adjustment, double glazing and 'Fine Nappa' leather. The W12 can be identified by fifteen spoke 19-inch alloy wheels and all-LED headlamps.
Prices are expected to start at about £58,000 when the order book opens in late July. The first cars will arrive in December 2010.
