Infiniti isn't hanging around with its new model offensive. Not long after the company launched in the UK with petrol-only engines, it has now unveiled the EX30d diesel-powered SUV. Alongside this, Infiniti has also revealed plans to offer hybrid power in its range-topping M saloon, which arrives in the UK in 2011.
Why's it here?
Infiniti is on a mission. Its initial line-up of models is intended to appeal to only a small portion of buyers interested in large petrol-powered car, but with the arrival of diesel engines it will be chasing down Audi, BMW and Mercedes at a much increased rate. A hybrid version of the M will also keep Infiniti right in the hunt, though the larger European saloon market that is dominated by diesels.
Show stopper or floor filler?
The EX30d is not new in shape but the engine is noteworthy for its 235bhp and substantial 406lb.ft of torque. It's enough to see the EX from 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds, while the same engine in the larger FX30d will manage 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds. For the EX30d, emissions of 224g/km are just enough to avoid the maximum road tax and company car hits. You won't have to wait long to sample the EX30d as it's on sale this summer, with prices to be announced closer to it reaching showrooms.
