You're looking at the Volvo XC60 R-Design, resplendent in Passion Red, a colour unique to R-Design versions. It's no surprise that this has jumped out of the closet really, because all Volvos get the overhaul sooner or later. So, let's get down to explaining the differences.
It's not just an aesthetic overhaul, actually, because the R-Design model gets stiffer damping, as well as a sharper steering rack, which will probably make the most tangible difference behind the wheel. Volvo has resisted the urge to lower the springs though, because it wanted the car to keep its off-road integrity.
The rest is visual, so you're looking at a set of optional 20-inch rims (18s are standard), body-coloured lower body sections, metal finish mirror caps and grille, and twin chromed tailpipes. Inside there's a pair of sports seats, 'smooth' leather upholstery, R-Design badges, blue gauges, a unique pattern for the 'floating' centre stack and aluminium pedals.
We're not sure what it'll cost yet, but it's got to be a couple of grand's worth. By way of comparison, the difference between an XC90 SE and an SE R-Design is just under £2,000. Word is that the right-hand drive models won't start production until November, so figure on early 2010 for first deliveries.
