2009-09-30: Audi R8 V10 in action

While several car makers have already decided to play down their presence at the Detroit Auto Show next month, Audi's stand should be one of the most visited, with a new concept promised and the debut of the keenly awaited V10-engined R8. We now have full details of Audi's fastest road car ever.

The new R8 is powered by a version of the 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 engine used in the sensational Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, though peak power is slightly down at 518bhp. Maximum torque of 391lb.ft is available at a relatively high 6,500rpm. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, allowing the R8 to hit 62mph from rest in 3.9 seconds, while the top speed is tantalisingly close to the magic 200mph mark at 196mph.

Quattro four-wheel drive is standard, as is Audi's excellent magnetically-adjusted adaptive damping, while buyers have the option of the R tronic automated manual gearbox.

Distinguishing the new V10-engined R8 from its V8-powered sibling is a bespoke set of 19-inch alloys, changes to the 'side blade' and side sill designs, restyled vents, new oval-shaped exhausts and special, all-LED lights. Audi claims to be the first car maker to utilise LEDs for high and low beam, daytime running lights and indicators, with 54 LED bulbs per light.

Following its debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show in January, the R8 5.2 FSI will go on sale before the summer, with prices starting at £99,575 - a premium of about £22,000 over the V8 model. The R tronic transmission will cost about £5,000 extra.
