Volkswagen has announced full details of a new Passat BlueMotion 2 with a more powerful engine incorporating a stop/start system. VW's latest frugal model is available to order now.
The principal difference between this version and the previous Passat BlueMotion is under the bonnet. The old, 1.9-litre "Pump Deuse" diesel engine has been replaced by a 2.0-litre common-rail unit. Delivering 108bhp, it is more powerful than the engine it replaces yet uses less fuel. Economy is further boosted by the engine stop/start system that shuts down the motor when the driver stops, selects neutral and releases the clutch.
As a result Volkswagen claims that the Passat will return 57.6mpg in both saloon and estate forms, which is an improvement of 2.2mpg over the old BlueMotion. Carbon dioxide emissions are reduced from 136g/km for the saloon to 128g/km and 129g/km for the Passat Estate.
The new VW Passat BlueMotion 2 costs £17,700 in saloon form or as an estate for £1,135 more. Orders are now being taken for the new model.
