Volkswagen has announced prices for the
sixth generation Golf. Orders are now being taken for the latest version of VW's family hatchback, which is due to arrive in the New Year.
Three trim levels are offered - S, SE and GT - and VW states that all models come with a high level of standard equipment, including electronic stability control (ESP), air conditioning and seven air bags. Moving up to SE trim adds 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control and better in-car entertainment. Go for the GT and you get lowered, sports suspension, 17-inch alloys and Alcantara-trimmed sports seats.
Power comes from familiar VW-group engines. Least powerful is the 79bhp 1.4-litre petrol motor; next up is a 101bhp 1.6 and two 1.4-litre TSI units - with 120 or 138bhp - complete the petrol range. Two 2.0-litre common rail diesels are also available with 108 or 138bhp.
Prices start at £13,150 on-the-road for a three-door Golf 1.4 S; a mid-range five-door 2.0-litre 108bhp SE model costs £17,275, while the most expensive model is the £20,980 GT with the 138bhp diesel and six-speed DSG transmission.
Though buyers can place their order now, the first UK cars will be delivered in January 2009.
