What?
The A4 TDI concept e is a "near production" study, exploring ways to boost fuel efficiency and lower carbon dioxide emissions. The 118bhp turbodiesel engine is designed for economy while the six-speed manual gearbox receives a lightweight casing and a set of economy-orientated ratios. The alternator charges the battery when the car is coasting or slowing down, a start-stop system is fitted and the brakes have been redesigned to cut down the drag between disks and pads, while the navigation system helps the driver calculate the most fuel-efficient route. The modifications should give 70mpg and 105 grams of CO2 per kilometre.
When?
Audi already has e versions of the A3 and A6 so the A4 TDI e can't be far off. The fuel saving features shown on the concept will appear on other Audi vehicles too.
Verdict?
Cars need to become more fuel efficient so Audi is heading in the right direction with the 'e' model line. Other manufacturers have shown how economy is compatible with driving pleasure.
