BMW's flagship 7 Series saloon is to be replaced by a new model later this year. A heavily revised version of the existing car, BMW has toned down the 7's styling - the current car's looks always being a contentious issue. Even so, the car this new 7 Series will replace has been BMW's most successful 7 Series model ever.
Despite a slight growth in dimensions it's thought that BMW has managed to keep the 7's weight around the same level thanks to extensive use of aluminium. Power will come from a range of V8 and straight-six engines, the turbocharged powerplants from
the X6 certain to feature heavily in the range. Even with V8 petrol power the new 7 Series should return impressive economy and emissions figures thanks to the inclusion of BMW's EfficientDynamics system.
Using energy regenerating brakes, clever engine ancillaries and smart alternator, engine power losses are kept to a minimum - particularly important given the inevitable number of power-hungry luxury items certain to feature. New technology to the 7 Series is an active suspension system with driver selectable settings, night vision and a lane departure warning system. BMW's oft criticised iDrive will also be heavily revised for easier operation of the car's numerous infotainment, comfort and climate settings.
It's thought that BMW will add a hybrid model to the range - as it's planning to do with the X6. An eight-speed automatic gearbox is expected, as is an in-car Internet system. Officially debuting at the
Paris Motor Show this September more details for the 7 will be revealed this weekend. Sales for the BMW flagship saloon begin in November.
